Report on Palmerston PPC 19-28 June 2002

The Parish Priest invited the Legion of Mary to conduct the P.P.C in Palmerston and delegated its actual running into the capable hands of  his assistant the Spiritual Director of the local Praesidium, Our Lady Help of Christians.

Participating Legionaries comprised :one member from Singapore, Two from Queensland, five from Adelaide and eleven from Victoria, the local president and a few of his legionaries added themselves to the team.

A total of 7386 homes were visited. 4528 were not at home and 605 Catholics were contacted. The 'not at home' category included houses with locked gates, and/or burglar proof high fences and an inordinate number of guard dogs.

It is no small feat to travel thousands of kilometres and work harmoniously together given the diversity of cultures who met for the first time, without the witness of the Holy spirit’s action and our Lady’s influence. Many of the team were officers in their praesidia and were familiar with the Legion system. They displayed obedience, humility and patience which encouraged a unity and friendliness. After a daily routine of meeting at 8.30, work at 10.30 till lunch at 1.00, then work till 5.00pm, evensong, and Mass at 6pm,we drove back home to get dinner ready, we needed no roster for the 'Mother' Legionaries would take turns to cook, clean and wash up. Needless to say, when it was the alternate day for the Pub dinner , there was a rush for the door.

We were privileged to have Holy Hour at 9.00 pm on a few occasions in the Parish Church.

The acquisition of a seven seater bus from a parishioner, along with the parish bus and a car we managed the transportation of moving us ,to and from the billet and the church, shopping ,excursions and the primary task of setting down and picking up all the pairs of legionaries on their twice-daily visitations. The drivers were truly patient, and heroic as well. And no one was lost.

We remain grateful to all involved : to the Priests and parish of Palmerston for their hospitality; to The Legion in Palmerston for all the preparation; and to Senatus for prayer and practical support.
