PPC Report West Melbourne

The nature of this PPC was unusual in as much as there were a large number of commercial properties within the parish boundaries. This enabled the area to be covered in a faster than anticipated time. The PPC commenced on the March long weekend, hence there were a greater number than usual call backs required.

The core team of ten, comprised members from three states with one from New Zealand. We were supported by many local praesidia for which we were very grateful. The young men of The Star of the Sea praesidia I feel need special mention, as their continuing support and joyful approach added joy to our daily lives.

We were doubly blessed to receive so much support from the parish priest, Fr Joseph Martins, who attended each daily meeting and gave such an uplifting AIlocutio to take with us on our visits. This would have been the greatest highlight and we did experience many.

Another memorable event was a visit to the Queen Victoria Markets, where contact was made with many of the stall holders, there we spoke with people of varied religions and nationalities, with many engaging in long conversation where possible. Several Catholic stall holders though not resident in the parish were interested in the parish programme for Stations of the Cross. Members of the Orthodox religion were also very pleased to receive the Miraculous Medal and accompanying leaflet, one lady saying she would take it to her, very precious, seven months old grandson.

The parishioners on home contact were also invited to read the parish leaflet we were distributing, and to attend the Lenten programme published.

This leaflet was also left with many of the business houses for perusal of their catholic employees. In speaking with these same people we found considerable interest. Hotels and Hostels were also called on and reception was very pleasing, as the transient population required much of this information.

Total number of visits 3180 Not home 2171 Not catholic 797 Catholic families 212
